Tactile feedback in real life sports: a pilot study from cross-country skiing
نویسندگان
چکیده
We describe the research challenges of bringing HCI into the domain of sports, and what research in this domain can add to the general questions multi-modality and sensor-based interaction. To illustrate this, we present results from a pilot study on providing tactile feedback to cross-country skiers. Our results show how real-time feedback can be provided for a variety of purposes without disrupting or disturbing the actual sporting experience ACM Classification

Peripheral interaction for sports – exploring two modalities for real-time feedback
We believe that sports is a domain that would both provide valuable input to the area of peripheral interaction, as well as benefit from peripheral interaction itself. We present two pilot studies on peripheral interaction for crosscountry skiing and golf using vibration feedback and audio feedback respectively. We believe the results of these initial studies are encouraging and aim to pursue t...
متن کاملOveruse injuries in cross-country skiing.
Cross-country skiing has always been one of the most popular winter sports in Scandinavia (Eriksson, 1976). Although downhill skiing has become more and more popular during the last ten years, cross-country skiing is still the most important mass sport in Finland. The number of competitive skiers has been increasing owing to the fact that the younger age groups as well as the veteran series hav...
متن کاملThe Russians Are the Fastest in Marathon Cross-Country Skiing: The “Engadin Ski Marathon”
It is well known that athletes from a specific region or country are dominating certain sports disciplines such as marathon running or Ironman triathlon; however, little relevant information exists on cross-country skiing. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the aspect of region and nationality in one of the largest cross-country skiing marathons in Europe, the "Engadin S...
متن کاملOccurrence and trends in ski injuries in Norway.
OBJECTIVES To provide an overview of ski injuries in Norway and to describe the changes between 1990 and 1996. METHODS All ski injuries (7966) treated at four hospitals providing health care to a defined population of about 11% of the Norwegian population were registered prospectively from 1990 to 1996. For this study, 6462 injuries sustained in cross country skiing, downhill skiing, telemark...
متن کاملA simulation of cross-country skiing on varying terrain by using a mathematical power balance model
The current study simulated cross-country skiing on varying terrain by using a power balance model. By applying the hypothetical inductive deductive method, we compared the simulated position along the track with actual skiing on snow, and calculated the theoretical effect of friction and air drag on skiing performance. As input values in the model, air drag and friction were estimated from the...
